Guide transcript

This is the smallest work in the exhibition, and perhaps the most intimate. Amara Diallo photographed her grandmother’s hands resting on a length of indigo cloth she had dyed herself. Diallo chose platinum printing, one of the oldest photographic processes, for its soft warm tones and its permanence. A platinum print can last for centuries. Take a moment to look at the textures: the creases of the skin, the weave of the fabric. Diallo has said that she wanted to make an image that would outlive both of them, a record of work, care and time.
